Keys – Monroe County’s best kept secret

Aerial1 300x64 Keys – Monroe County’s best kept secret

For a relatively affordable day out in the Keys, you must take a historic tour of Pigeon Key just west of Marathon. This island wasn’t much use to anyone until Henry Flagler needed it to complete the 7 mile bridge for his railroad that he was determined to build all the way to Key West. If you don’t know anything about Henry Flagler he was a partner with Rockefeller and they owned the Standard Oil Company together. He was probably one of the wealthiest men in the turn of the century. Continue reading

Kokomo in the Florida Keys?

Off the Florida Keys there’s a place called Kokomo

That’s where you wanna go to get away from it all

Bodies in the sand, tropical drink melting in your hand

We’ll be falling in love to the rhythm of a steel drum band

Down in Kokomo

Does Kokomo really exist in the Florida Keys? If you’ve never heard of Kokomo, it was from a song the Beach Boys sang and everyone thought it was in the Florida Keys. Well, turns out Kokomo isn’t even close to Florida. It is in Indiana. This midwestern city is known as the “City of Firsts” thanks to its rich automotive heritage and history of technological discoveries. So, why has everyone been searching for Kokomo in the Florida Keys? Continue reading

Florida Keys Travel Safety Tips

I wanted to give you some tips on travel safety when you are in the Florida Keys. Where to go if you get hurt and you need a hospital or how to contact the police if need be. Traveling to another area can be just a horrendous experience if you don’t know who to contact in an emergency. I know there is 911 that you can call, but if you prepare yourself for the worst, the worst usually never happens. Better to be safe than sorry is what I always say.

There are 3 hospitals throughout the Keys. In the Upper Keys is the Mariner’s Hospital. It is at Mile Marker 91.5 in Tavernier. The phone number for the Mariner’s is 305-434-3000. Continue reading

Florida’a No Name Key

About 30 miles from Key West is a small island in the Florida Keys called No Name Key. If you are on Big Pine Key you can get to No Name via a wide, concrete bridge. The bridge is actually a pretty popular fishing spot because it has wide pedestrian lanes on each side. But this tiny island gets lots of visitors and the reason why is to see the Key Deer whose home is on this 998 acre island.

Funny thing is 820 acres are protected because this is the home of the National Key Deer Refuge. Yet people do live here, there are about 43 homes currently and visitors and residents alike like to hike through the refuge or kayak around the island. Continue reading

Florida Keys Vacation – Mallory Square activities

I have to add a bit of cuteness here from our Florida Keys vacation trip. We went into the city of Key West and found Mallory Square, which is right off of Duval Street. It was kind of rainy for a few days that we were in the Keys but that didn’t stop us from enjoying our vacation. What I’ve heard is normally the square is filled with demonstrators and those selling their wares but with the rainy days, we didn’t see much of that.

However, there was one act that showed up that you will adore: Continue reading
