Restaurant Certificates

 Restaurant Certificates

I have just had some great experiences with a new site that I ‘ve got to tell you about! Restaurant gift certificates are a great way to save a few dollars when you are traveling. Let me tell you about my savings so that when you do decide to go to the Florida Keys, you can save some money on your way there, as well as in the Florida Keys.

When I first found Restaurant.com, I was planning a trip to Gettysburg PA. So, hubby and I took our grand kids to see a place called Land of the Little Horses. We found a certificate for a nice outside dining restaurant there. I kept checking the website and one day they had a sale of 80% off on their certificates. So, I checked out places to eat and found a great place. Of course, skeptical as I am, I called the Restaurant myself to make sure they took the certificates. The lady on the other end knew exactly what I was talking about but knowing it was a legit place of business to get certificates made me feel better! I sure didn’t want to get to Gettysburg and find out the certificates were a rip off! Continue reading

The Keys -No Name Pub

When I was doing my blog post on the Key Deer I found the No Name Pub. I have not been to it when we were in the Keys, but I find the history of this bar so interesting that I just knew you would want to know more about it too. So I find out that back in the 30′s it was a general store and bait and tackle shop, which makes sense as we are talking about the Florida Keys here. Then the owners added a small room onto the main structure and it became an eatery, and the Pub was born.

Back in those days, in the 30′s the customers were from all parts of the world, coming in from the mainland on the Ferry. So it seemed the smart thing to do was to convert an upstairs storage area into a brothel! It only lasted for a little while as the saying went the fishermen were better looking than the ladies! Key Lime Pie in the Florida Keys

I absolutely cannot write a blog without mentioning the famous Key Lime Pie. I couldn’t leave Key West without trying a slice.  After stuffing myself with Mahi Mahi, I had to ask the server to box my piece of pie up for later. I did have it later, about an hour later because the pie kept beckoning me to eat it, I swear! Here it is or what is left of it!

In almost every eatery in the Florida Keys and especially in Key West you can find Key Lime pies. People argue about the crust, if it should be made with graham crackers or pie dough, but no one really knows where the first key lime pie was made. We do know the authentic filling of a key lime pie in the Florida Keys is light yellow.

Some people believe that William Curry, a ship salvager from Key West and a very rich man had a cook named Aunt Sally who created the pie in the late 1800′s. Historians aren’t so sure. Finally in 1930 someone thought to write the recipe down. Before the 1930′s there was no refrigeration in the Keys, so cook’s used canned sweetened condensed milk which made the pie smooth and delicious. Which was a good thing as far as I am concerned. Pirates in the Keys, Arggghh!

Whether you are a big kid or you want to take your kids, I have to tell you about a great place to go when you are in Key West. It is called the Pirate Soul, a museum that claims to have the largest collection of Pirate artifacts on display. With the interactive technology of today, this is much more than a museum, it is an adventure with touch and audio-animatronics almost like you see in a theme park.

You can go above deck and below to see all the pirate’s lore. They have almost 500 museum quality artifacts. Even Captain Kidd’s journal of his last voyage can be found here. Captain Thomas Tew, who had the only known authentic treasure chest can be found at this museum in the Keys. You will be taken back to a time you only heard about in the stories you read as a kid.
