Travel Safety Tips

I wanted to give you some tips on travel safety when you are in the Florida Keys. Where to go if you get hurt and you need a hospital or how to contact the police if need be. Traveling to another area can be just a horrendous experience if you don’t know who to contact in an emergency. I know there is 911 that you can call, but if you prepare yourself for the worst, the worst usually never happens. Better to be safe than sorry is what I always say.

There are 3 hospitals throughout the Keys. In the Upper Keys is the Mariner’s Hospital. It is at Mile Marker 91.5 in Tavernier. The phone number for the Mariner’s is 305-434-3000.

If you are in the Middle Keys you can go to the Fisherman’s Hospital at Mile Marker 48.7 in Marathon. Their phone number is 305-743-5533.

On Stock Island in the Lower Keys is the Lower Keys Medical Center. This is right before Key West. They are on College Road and their phone number is 305-294-5531. It would probably be a good idea to write this information with phone numbers down and keep it in a place where you will be able to easily find it. I wrote my information on a 3 X 5 index card and stuck in my purse so I could just reach in and grab it if needed but you do what ever is easiest.

If you need the police while in Key West the Police Department’s number is 305-809-1111, or if you need to talk to the Monroe County Sheriff you can call 305-289-2430.

The Keys has a Visitor’s Assist line with multi-lingual staff and their phone number 800-771-KEYS. You can call them anytime and they will do their best to assist you 24/7.

If you are in the Florida Keys and a hurricane threatens, visitors are always asked to leave first. Evacuation orders are only given if there is significant reason for it so you should have plenty of time to get out of the Keys. You can keep updated by visiting or calling 800-771-KEYS.

The last thing I want to give you is the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary’s phone number. You can call 305-292-0311 to find out what the state regulations are for boating and fishing the Florida Key. They also offer boating tips for a safe experience.
Phone 305-292-0311

Oops, one more place you should know about is the United States Coast Guard. Go to for more information.
